Here’s how to enable and turn off Ambient display in Pixel 3 XL and Pixel 3. Ambient display feature is useful to wake up screen on Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL when you receive new notifications. Step 1: Swipe down notification shade twice and tap the Settings gear icon.
Step 2: Tap Display.
In Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL display settings, you can see brightness level, Night light, Adaptive brightness, Wallpaper, Device theme, and advanced settings.
Step 3: Tap Advanced.
Step 4: Scroll down at end of the page and tap Ambient display.

Double-tap to check phone
To quickly show notifications, time and other information from Google Pixel 3 lock screen, enable double-tap to check notification without unlocking your device. After activating this setting, just double-tap your Pixel 3 screen to show notifications.
Lift to check phone
Turn on a lift to check the phone on Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL to show notification on the lock screen to just pick up your phone.
Step 5: Turn on toggle New notifications to wake up screen when receiving notifications on Pixel 3 & Pixel 3 XL.
If you don’t want to wake up screen when new notifications arrive on your phone, turn off Ambient display on Pixel 3 XL and Pixel 3.
